James Bond Island


Tapuu Island, actually, but it kind of got a new name when it was featured in a James Bond movie. It is translated "Nail Island" because the top part of the island is heavier than the bottom. We see pictures of it on signs coming in and out of Phang Nga city all the time, and today was the big day we finally took the kids to rent a long-tail boat and tour the islands we live practically next door to. We remembered our camera, and I'm so glad we did. Is there any place in the world like this? This archipelago of islands, one after the other, placed in jewel-like ocean water, with bizarrely shaped limestone formations and caves...it is heart-achingly beautiful.

Santa's birthday, right?

Santa's birthday, right? I remember one year, decades ago when I was about 13, we went to Hawaii to celebrate Christmas with our Japanese relatives. It felt so odd to be celebrating Christmas in the tropics. I remember learning to sing, "Melekelikemaka is the thing to say saying Merry Christmas the Hawaiian way" or something like that...don't quote me. Santa on surfboards, palm trees, pineapples and plastic Christmas trees. It all felt very odd. Fun, but odd. It is also odd to think that this kind of tropical Christmas, without the song, English as the spoken language or big region-wide celebrations among the populace, is what will be most familiar to my children.
